JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for coordinating the development and implementation of recreation programs and/or facilities.
MAJOR DUTIES
Plans, organizes, develops, and schedules recreation, athletic, and fitness programs.
Trains, assigns, directs, schedules, supervises, and evaluates assigned seasonal and part-time personnel.
Maintains and evaluates a variety of records, including staff training records.
Assists in the development and distribution of promotional materials.
Coordinates recreation center membership recruitment and retention efforts.
Plans and schedules athletics programs, including leagues, tournaments, selecting and training coaches, and enforcing policies and procedures.
Resolves questions and concerns from staff, program participants and the general public.
Coordinates the scheduling of facilities for use by external groups.
Researches, develops, implements, and evaluates current and new programs and events.
Prepares budget recommendations and manages approved funds.
Manages program inventory; prepares specifications for new purchases.
Prepares a variety of regular and special reports.
Acquires and manages funding from grants and other external sources.
Performs related duties.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Recreation Superintendent assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include ADA regulations, National Recreation and Parks Association guidelines, sports association rules and regulations, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The purpose of this position is to coordinate recreation programming for youth and adults. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of leisure services to area residents.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.
The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
