JOB SUMMARY
 
This position performs specialized duties in the maintenance of city sports complexes and the ice arena as well as city parks, lake, and facilities.
 
MAJOR DUTIES
 

  • Performs facilities maintenance functions related to parks, athletic fields, lake, and related facilities.
 
  • Participates in the repair, winterize, and maintenance of irrigation and sprinkler systems.
 
  • Participates in the repair and maintenance of ice arena systems, equipment, and compressors.
 
  • Operates a variety of heavy and light equipment.
 
  • Performs turf management duties; mows, aerates, and fertilizes turf.
 
  • Performs ice making functions; maintains ice.
 
  • Mixes and applies herbicides and fertilizer; ensures proper turf management principles are followed.
 
  • Trims, removes, and provides care for trees, bushes, and ornamental plants; removes stumps.
 
  • Installs holiday decorations; repairs decorations as needed.
 
  • Works with user groups, players, and coaches to resolve field concerns.
 
  • Participates in sports field preparations.
 
  • Participates in construction projects.
 
  • Assists with snow removal operations.
 
  • Operates equipment, including loaders, backhoes, splitters, trenchers, dump trucks, etc. as licensed; maintains and repairs equipment as needed.
 
  • Operates a bucket truck and aerial lift.
 
  • Maintains and repairs field lighting.
 
  • Performs winterization procedures.
 
  • Performs related duties.

  • Knowledge of ice arena repair and maintenance principles.
 
  • Knowledge of parks and grounds maintenance principles and practices.

  • Knowledge of equipment repair and maintenance principles.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
 
The Sports Complex and Parks Crewleader assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
 
GUIDELINES
 
Guidelines include the City of Mitchell Safety Manual, OSHA regulations, building codes, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines required are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. 
 
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
 
  • The work consists of related maintenance duties.  The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the work.
 
  • The purpose of this position is to perform specialized duties in support of the operation and maintenance of the sports complex and ice arena. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of recreation services to area residents.

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city personnel, volunteers, contractors, vendors, coaches and players, and the general public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
 
  • The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
 
  • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
 
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
 
None.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. 
 
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
 
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid CDL issued by the State of South Dakota within 6 months of hire.
 
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a state-certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License.
 

**The current schedule for this position is Tuesday - Saturday; (Thursday, Friday, Saturday - Sports Complex  and  Tuesday, Wednesday - Parks Department.)  This schedule is subject to change based on the needs of the department.

**The work is typically performed outdoors,  including summer heat and seasonally cold or inclement weather. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
