Timm Johnson, founder of Mitchell-based Dakota Intelligence, will speak to the Mitchell Exchange Club at its Monday lunch meeting at Blarney's on September 14.
It's a good room for a practical conversation about technology. For nearly 60 years, the Exchange Club has been one of the groups Mitchell counts on to get things done, known for the Fourth of July fireworks, the flag displays on national holidays, and the burgers and onions at the state amateur baseball tournament. This summer the club also received the National Exchange Club's National C.A.R.E. Award for its Free Cyber Parenting Videos 101 project, 25 short videos created with the Davison County Child Protection Team and child cybercrime expert Det. Rich Wistocki to help parents protect kids online.
Johnson's talk skips the buzzwords. It covers what AI can realistically handle for a Mitchell organization or small business, where it falls short, and how to start small.
For anyone who won't be in the room, the short version is this: start with the job that's already eating your time. That might be the phone that rings after hours, the volunteer schedule that lives in one person's head, or the same information typed into three different forms. If AI can't make a real dent in something like that, it isn't worth your money yet.
Johnson launched Dakota Intelligence in 2026 to help South Dakota businesses, farms, and organizations put AI to practical use, and he is part of the Leadership Mitchell 2026-27 class.
