JOB SUMMARY
This position performs technical duties related to the installation, repair and maintenance of street signs, street lights. and traffic signals.
MAJOR DUTIES
* Installs and maintains traffic signs and posts.
* Troubleshoots and repairs traffic signal and school zone lights.
* Maintains and repairs all city-owned street lights.
* Designs and manufactures traffic signs.
* Lays out and installs pavement markings.
* Locates underground utilities.
* Maintains division equipment and vehicles.
* Times and programs traffic signals.
* Upgrades and maintains computer design plotting equipment and software.
* Researches and orders supplies as needed.
* Maintains and repairs emergency weather sirens.
* Maintains sign and signal inventory.
* Installs signs, barricades, and fences for special events.
* Installs barricades and cones at emergency incidents.
* Responds to after-hours emergencies when on-call and during weekends.
* Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
* Knowledge of traffic control system principles and practices.
* Knowledge of the repair, maintenance and installation of electronic and electrical traffic signal equipment and fiber optics.
* Knowledge of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
* Knowledge of safety rules and precautions related to electrical hazards and equipment operations.
* Knowledge of computerized communications networking principles.
* Knowledge of computers and job related software programs.
* Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
* Skill in the development and interpretations of wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical drawings.
* Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Traffic Technician Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instruction. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, state standards, federal highway standards, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
* The work consists of related technical duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contributes to the complexity of the position.
* The purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal devices and street lights. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the traffic control system.

* Contacts are typically with co-workers, vendors, contractors, representatives of state agencies, and the general public.
* Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
* The work is sometimes performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, works in many vehicles and in a bucket truck, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
* The work is sometimes performed in an office, stockroom and often outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease and machinery with moving parts. Work is performed at high elevations and requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, hardhats, etc.

None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
* Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
* Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid CDL issued by the State of South Dakota.
Starting Wage is $26.322 per hour with a full benefit package.
