JOB SUMMARY
This position supervises and participates in the work of a crew of personnel engaged in the maintenance of city sports complexes and the ice arena.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Schedules, directs, and supervise full- and part-time staff at all sports complexes and the Ice Arena.
- Supervises and participates in facilities maintenance functions.
- Supervises the repair and maintenance of irrigation and sprinkler systems.
- Supervises the repair and maintenance of ice area systems, equipment, and compressors.
- Operates a variety of heavy and light equipment.
- Supervises and participates in ice making functions; maintains ice.
- Assists in the scheduling of games, tournaments, and projects.
- Mixes and applies herbicides and fertilizer; ensures proper turf management principles are followed.
- Works with user groups, players, and coaches to resolve field concerns.
- Supervises and participates in sports field preparations.
- Develops and implements mowing schedules.
- Supervises and participates in construction projects.
- Assists with snow removal operations.
- Maintains and repairs field lighting.
- Performs winterization procedures.
- Performs related duties.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Sports Complex Superintendent assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include the City of Mitchell Safety Manual, OSHA regulations, building codes, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related supervisory and maintenance duties. The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the work.
- The purpose of this position is to supervise the operation and maintenance of the sports complex and ice arena. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of recreation services to area residents.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city personnel, volunteers, contractors, vendors, coaches and players, and the general public.
- Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate persons.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over assigned full-time, seasonal, and part-time personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid CDL issued by the State of South Dakota within 6 months of hire.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a state-certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License.
