Parks Specialist - Sports Complex

This position performs specialized duties in the maintenance of city sports complexes and the ice arena.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Performs facilities maintenance functions.
  • Participates in the repair and maintenance of irrigation and sprinkler systems.
  • Participates in the repair and maintenance of ice area systems, equipment, and compressors.
  • Operates a variety of heavy and light equipment.
  • Performs ice making functions; maintains ice.
  • Mixes and applies herbicides and fertilizer; ensures proper turf management principles are followed.
  • Works with user groups, players, and coaches to resolve field concerns.
  • Participates in sports field preparations.
  • Participates in construction projects.
  • Assists with snow removal operations.
  • Maintains and repairs field lighting.
  • Performs winterization procedures.
  • Performs related duties.

  • Knowledge of ice arena repair and maintenance principles.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Sports Complex Crewleader assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include the City of Mitchell Safety Manual, OSHA regulations, building codes, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.   

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related maintenance duties.  The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the work.
  • The purpose of this position is to performs specialized duties in support of the operation and maintenance of the sports complex and ice arena. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of recreation services to area residents.

CONTACTS                                                                  

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city personnel, volunteers, contractors, vendors, coaches and players, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.  
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid CDL issued by the State of South Dakota within 6 months of hire.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a state-certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License.

 

The work schedule for this position is generally Monday through Friday. 

The work is typically performed outdoors,  including summer heat and seasonally cold or inclement weather. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

Wages:  $23.152 per hour (2025) and $23.846 per hour (2026)
