In the heart of Mitchell, amidst the charm of South Dakota's landscapes, resides a family whose journey is as inspiring as it is heartwarming. Meet Jennifer Shepherd, a resilient woman, alongside her husband Brice and their three sons Drew (30), Andrew (22), and Kameron (23). Their story is one of courage, community, and the pursuit of happiness against all odds.

Jennifer, a two-time breast cancer survivor, exudes gratitude for each day, finding solace in her family and her passions. She met Brice during her tenure in Colorado, where he concluded his 16-year military service. Now, as Brice's full-time caregiver, Jennifer balances this noble duty with her entrepreneurial spirit, owning a Board & Brush studio that not only sustains her family but also fulfills her creatively.

Originally hailing from LeRoy, NY, the Shepherds found their way to Mitchell driven by a desire for change and the allure of South Dakota's tranquility. The decision to settle in Mitchell wasn't random; it was a deliberate choice inspired by friends who knew Mitchell for the renowned Corn Palace. Settling just outside the town's hustle, they discovered a haven that perfectly catered to Brice's needs while fostering a sense of belonging.

Upon their arrival, Mitchell embraced the Shepherds with open arms. The warmth of the community and the kindness of neighbors were immediate, dispelling any reservations they may have had. Despite the initial apprehensions typical of any relocation, their transition was remarkably smooth, a testament to the welcoming nature of Mitchell's residents.

For Jennifer, the highlight of Mitchell living lies in its community spirit. Engaging actively in local organizations like Heart & Sole and Women of the Moose, she found not just friends but a sense of purpose. Her business not only serves as a livelihood but also a platform to connect with fellow artisans and enthusiasts. Through her craft, she weaves bonds that enrich both her life and those around her.

The Shepherd family's integration into Mitchell's fabric extends beyond professional and social realms. They've savored the town's culinary delights, favoring eateries like The Depot, Twin Dragon, and Mya’s Teriyaki. They've reveled in local events, with the Farmer's Market and summer festivities topping their list of favorite pastimes.

In the realm of hobbies, Jennifer's passion for crafting thrives, particularly through resin art and tumblers. She touts the Corn Palace and the gift shop as a must-visit location. The bustling Farmer's Market and the mesmerizing performances of Mitchell's Show Choir, Friend de Coup, have become cherished aspects of their lives, offering new avenues of enjoyment and engagement.

Their journey in Mitchell isn't just about personal fulfillment; it's also about giving back. Jennifer's pursuit of a master's degree in business at DWU reflects her commitment to continuous growth and contribution to the community. Her business venture isn't merely a means of sustenance but a channel to share her talents and enrich the lives of others.

As they reflect on their time in Mitchell, the Shepherds are filled with contentment and gratitude. To newcomers considering Mitchell, Jennifer offers a resounding endorsement, likening it to her own "Mayberry" where dreams, no matter how grand or modest, find fertile ground to flourish. Theirs is a story of resilience, camaraderie, and the unwavering belief that even in the quietude of small-town living, life's greatest joys await.

In the tranquil embrace of Mitchell, the Shepherd family has found not just a home but a sanctuary where their dreams take flight against the backdrop of cornfields and community spirit.
