Sydney von Arb – A Journey of Growth and Connection
Meet Sydney von Arb, a Quality Engineer at ETRIA Products USA in Mitchell, South Dakota. Originally from Alton, IA, and raised in Maple Lake, MN, Sydney made the move to Mitchell after college to pursue a career in engineering. While she doesn’t have a spouse, children, or pets, her story is one of personal growth and building community ties.
Sydney’s journey to Mitchell began with a job listing. After completing her education, she moved from Fargo, ND, in December, drawn by the opportunity to work as a Process Engineer. Her career later progressed to her current role as a Quality Engineer. Despite facing two December blizzards during her move, Sydney was struck by the warm, welcoming nature of Mitchell’s residents. “The people here are all very nice and welcoming,” she shared, a sentiment that has continued to shape her positive experience.
Sydney describes Mitchell as a “nice, tidy town” with the perfect balance of convenience and accessibility. “It’s big enough with enough stores to not need to leave, but larger cities are close enough to visit on occasion,” she explains. Her favorite part of living in Mitchell is the kindness of its people.
Since moving, Sydney has immersed herself in the community by joining the Holy Family Catholic Church and enjoying activities like weekly pool games at Dr. Lucky’s with coworkers. She’s also become a fan of the newcomer events hosted in Mitchell, finding them to be a great way to connect with others.
Sydney has developed a love for Mitchell’s local scene, especially its food and entertainment options. She enjoys grabbing a drink at the VFW and dining at Bradley’s and Cattleman’s—praising the latter for its delicious steaks. The Corn Palace stands out as a must-visit landmark, while the chili cook-off at the VFW remains one of her most memorable local events.
An avid reader and outdoor enthusiast, Sydney enjoys activities like pheasant hunting, golfing, camping, and stargazing. Living in Mitchell has introduced her to the joys of playing pool and cornhole, hobbies she’s excited to improve on.
Sydney encourages newcomers to dive into Mitchell’s friendly atmosphere. “Get out at least once a week to meet and get to know the locals, whether it be at a bar or a restaurant. It’s a great way to grow new relationships,” she advises.
Her reflections on starting over in Mitchell are both inspiring and practical: “The first step is always the hardest. Stay committed to your new beginning and stay true to yourself. You’ll be amazed at the relationships and success you gain along the way.”
While Sydney wishes she had been better prepared for the harsh winter weather when moving, she embraces the change and growth her decision has brought. “Change can be scary, but what is scarier is allowing fear to stop you from growing, evolving, and progressing,” she says—a message that perfectly encapsulates her journey.
