Moving to a new town can be both exciting and daunting, but for Abby Birkel and her family, the transition to Mitchell, SD, has been a heartwarming experience filled with new opportunities and friendly faces. Abby shares more about her background, her initial impressions of Mitchell, and her journey of settling into the community.

Abby Birkel and her husband, Mike, share a rich story that began in a small-town street dance in Fairfax, SD. The couple has two children, Payton, 24, and Sydney, 19, who are beginning their own journeys as young adults. As a close-knit family, they cherish their time together and value the sense of community wherever they go.

Originally from Spencer, NE, Abby has spent much of her young adult life in South Dakota. Her husband, Mike, was born and raised in South Dakota, and the couple always appreciated the state for its charm and the welcoming spirit of its people. When an opportunity arose for them to return to South Dakota, they embraced the chance to relocate to Mitchell, a city they had always admired. “I have always appreciated Mitchell, as it hosts an amenity that a bigger community offers while maintaining the small-town mentality,” says Abby.

Arriving in Mitchell, Abby and her family were greeted by what she describes as “plenty of friendly faces.” The picturesque Lake Mitchell added to the welcoming atmosphere, providing a sense of peace and tranquility as they adjusted to their new surroundings. Abby did not experience any significant challenges or surprises during her initial days in Mitchell, which she credits to the community's warmth and hospitality.

Since moving to Mitchell, Abby has actively engaged in community life, becoming a member of the Mitchell Chamber of Commerce through her business, Creative Advantages. She is also a member of True Fitness Health Club, Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and the PEO organization. Her commitment to community engagement reflects her passion for helping others and being part of a larger cause.

Abby has also enjoyed exploring the local culinary scene, with Koinonia Kafe standing out as a favorite spot for its wonderful coffee. She looks forward to discovering more local eateries and unique spots as she settles in further.
Abby is a health enthusiast who enjoys staying active, spending time outdoors, reading, and meeting people from all walks of life. Mitchell's True Fitness Health Club has been a great fit for her, offering a supportive environment where fitness classes feel more like a community support group. “I anticipate a lot more biking, kayaking, and social events in the future,” she says, highlighting her love for the area's biking and running trails around the lake.

Professionally, Abby is the founder of Creative Advantages, a business and marketing consulting firm aimed at helping entrepreneurs maximize their success. Her passion for assisting others in their business journeys aligns perfectly with Mitchell’s entrepreneurial spirit. Though her husband’s job promotion was the primary reason for their move, Abby sees a bright future for her business in Mitchell and is eager to make a positive impact in the community.

Among her favorite places in Mitchell, Abby lists Lake Mitchell, True Fitness, and the many welcoming smiles she has encountered. She has also enjoyed the First Fridays events and looks forward to expanding her social circle through more local events as she continues to settle in.

For those considering a move to Mitchell, Abby encourages them to “ask questions and reach out to the Chamber—they are an amazing team of resources!” Her experience has shown her that the Mitchell Chamber is a valuable ally in navigating life in a new town.

Reflecting on her move, Abby says, “My heart and excitement about being a new resident of Mitchell is beyond words.” While she was initially nervous about the change, she finds solace in the friendships she has formed and the opportunities that lie ahead. If there’s one thing she wishes, it would be to have experienced the possibilities in Mitchell sooner.

Abby’s journey to Mitchell is a testament to the city’s appeal—a place where community spirit, opportunity, and natural beauty converge. As she continues to grow her business and immerse herself in the community, Abby leaves us with a fitting quote by C.S. Lewis: “There are far better things ahead than any we leave behind.”

Abby Birkel's story is one of optimism, community, and the promise of new beginnings. Mitchell is not just a new address for Abby and her family; it's a place to grow, connect, and make a lasting impact.
