Kindergarten Sweethearts to Community Leaders: The Lauritsen’s Mitchell Story

Mike Lauritsen’s journey has come full circle, bringing him back to his hometown of Mitchell, South Dakota, where he now serves as CEO of the Mitchell Area Development Corporation and Chamber of Commerce. Alongside his wife Jennifer and their two daughters, he has found a renewed appreciation for the community that shaped his childhood.

Mike’s story begins with a remarkable love story: he met his wife Jennifer in kindergarten at Longfellow Elementary School. What started as a childhood friendship blossomed into a lifelong partnership. Today, they are parents to two young daughters and share their home with a miniature Australian Shepherd named Winnie.

Having spent 20 years working in state and local government across South Dakota, Mike never forgot his roots. When the opportunity arose to return to Mitchell, he knew it was the right move for his family. Encouraged by connections made at a housing conference, he was inspired to step into a leadership role that would allow him to contribute meaningfully to his hometown.

“For my family and me, returning to Mitchell felt like a homecoming,” Mike shares. “We were excited to reconnect with friends, family, and a community we’ve always loved.”

Mike and his family quickly immersed themselves in Mitchell’s vibrant community life. Whether joining local organizations like Rotary, Lions, and Kiwanis, or attending downtown events, the Lauritsen’s have embraced every opportunity to connect.

One standout experience for Mike was a pheasant hunt with school superintendent Joe Childs. “I reconnected with a high school friend during that hunt,” he recalls. “It’s moments like these that remind me how special this community is.”

For Mike, Mitchell offers the perfect blend of family life and outdoor adventure. His favorite places include the family farm west of Mitchell, Hitchcock Park, and the pool during summer. Watching his daughters wrestle for the Mitchell Kernels has also become a cherished pastime. “Being part of the wrestling community has been an unexpected passion,” he says.

As CEO, Mike has led several impactful initiatives, including attracting new businesses, hosting workforce summits, and collaborating on housing developments. “It’s rewarding to work on projects that strengthen our community,” he says.

Mike is equally proud of Mitchell’s dynamic downtown events, including the Parade of Lights and the pre-Sturgis party, which he describes as “a new and exciting experience.”

For anyone considering a move to Mitchell, Mike’s advice is simple: “Get involved in the community. Mitchell is full of welcoming people eager to share what makes this place special.”
The Lauritsen’s’ journey is a testament to the warmth and opportunity that Mitchell offers. As Mike puts it, “It’s a blessing to be back, surrounded by family, friends, and a community that cares.”
