Atousa Dinyari: Finding Her Hallmark Moment in Mitchell
For 28-year-old Atousa Dinyari, moving from Orange County, California, to Mitchell, South Dakota, was a big change. From the slower pace of life to experiencing her first South Dakota winter, there were plenty of adjustments along the way. But what started as a career opportunity quickly turned into something much more meaningful.
Originally from California and of Persian-American heritage, Atousa had spent years working in the automotive and motorcycle industries. Her passion for motorcycles, cars, and events eventually led her to cross paths with the team at Klock Werks during a motorcycle event in California.
After meeting the team, she made a trip to Mitchell to visit, and it didn't take long for her to fall in love with the community.
"Mitchell is literally the Christmas Hallmark movie I watched growing up," Atousa shared.
And as it turns out, her first night in Mitchell was something straight out of a movie.
After arriving in Sioux Falls around 11 p.m., Atousa made her way to Mitchell, arriving around midnight. While downtown, she caught her first glimpse of the World's Only Corn Palace and unexpectedly crossed paths with Mitchell's mayor.
"He asked me to pick a color. I had no idea where he was going with it, but of course I picked pink," she recalled.
Before she knew it, the entire Corn Palace was glowing pink.
"It was hands down every little girl's Hallmark movie moment dream come true."
Although Atousa quickly fell in love with Mitchell, transitioning from Southern California to South Dakota came with a few surprises.
Getting used to the slower pace of life was one of her biggest adjustments. The quieter streets and lack of bright city lights were unfamiliar, and her first experience with a South Dakota winter was certainly memorable.
"Shoveling snow is definitely not my favorite thing in the world," she joked, adding that her first slip on the ice was another experience she won't soon forget.
But despite the cold temperatures and quieter evenings, Atousa discovered something that made Mitchell stand out from anywhere she had lived before, the people.
"It doesn't matter where you are, everyone is so kind and takes the time to speak to you and get to know you, and that's something I had never experienced in California."
Now, after about a year in Mitchell, that sense of connection has become one of her favorite things about living here.
"I love that anywhere you go, you run into someone you know, and that's coming from someone who's only lived here for a year. I can't even imagine how fun it is if you grew up here or have been in town for a while."
For Atousa, finding her place in Mitchell didn't happen by sitting on the sidelines. She made a conscious effort to get involved, meet new people, and experience everything the community has to offer.
Today, she serves as secretary and a board member for Mitchell's Young Professionals group, an opportunity that has helped her build relationships and become more connected to the community.
She has also embraced a variety of local activities, from spending Wednesday evenings watching community softball games to participating in Mitchell's Parade of Lights.
"Last winter I got to be a part of the Parade of Lights. That was hands down one of the best experiences I've ever had."
Another important part of her life in Mitchell has been finding a church community at RiverTree Church. Atousa joined the church's hospitality group, where she spends time each month welcoming and connecting with others.
She credits Pastor Dan and Pastor Milt for helping make the experience especially meaningful, describing them as two of the most big-hearted people she has ever met.
Atousa has also become involved with a local newcomers group hosted by Doreen. Every couple of weeks, the group gathers for activities throughout Mitchell, including cooking classes, family days at the park, and planting flowers.
These experiences have given her the opportunity to explore her new community while building friendships along the way.
While Mitchell's welcoming atmosphere has made it feel like home, Atousa's career was a major reason she made the move in the first place.
Today, she works as a Brand Specialist at Klock Werks, where she helps coordinate and attend motorcycle events across the United States.
Having worked in the automotive and motorcycle industries for years, including more than eight years of event experience, Atousa was excited about the opportunity to take her career beyond California.
"My job 100% had a huge influence on my move here," she explained.
Working for a nationally recognized motorcycle brand while having the opportunity to travel across the country has been a major professional milestone.
For someone whose hobbies have always revolved around cars and motorcycles, the position has allowed her to turn a lifelong passion into an exciting career.
When she's not traveling for work, Atousa still enjoys riding her motorcycle and working on her car and bike.
But Mitchell has also introduced her to a new passion, Pilates.
Since moving to town, Atousa has become a regular at Power Pilates, an experience she describes as both therapeutic and life changing. She credits Jade and the entire Power Pilates team for creating such a positive environment.
Like many Mitchell residents, Atousa has found a few favorite local spots that make the community feel even more like home.
At the very top of her list is Bread & Vine, a downtown destination that perfectly captures the small-town charm she loves.
"Hands down my number one favorite place in Mitchell is Bread & Vine," she said.
From the friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere to the food and thoughtfully designed space, Atousa says the business embodies everything she loves about the community.
She especially appreciates Denise's decorating talents, which help create the cozy, comfortable atmosphere that reminds her of the Hallmark movies she grew up watching.
When it comes to dining out, Puerto Vallarta takes the top spot as her favorite restaurant.
And while she's experienced plenty of memorable moments in Mitchell already, two local events stand out: the Parade of Lights and the Klock Werks Pre-Sturgis Party.
Both represent what she has come to appreciate most about Mitchell: opportunities to bring people together, celebrate the community, and create lasting memories.
Looking back on her first year in Mitchell, Atousa recognizes just how much her experience has changed as she's become more involved in the community.
She understands that moving from a large city to a smaller community can seem intimidating, especially for someone accustomed to having endless shopping, entertainment, and activities nearby.
But she wants others considering a move to Mitchell to know that small-town living doesn't mean there's nothing to do.
"My biggest advice for someone considering moving to Mitchell is simple: GET INVOLVED."
Atousa believes the key to enjoying life in Mitchell is showing up, joining groups, attending events, and making an effort to meet people.
"The more you join groups and show up to activities, you begin to realize how much there is to do in Mitchell and how much better it is doing it with a close-knit community."
In fact, she says her experience during the most recent eight months has been significantly better than her first four months in town, simply because she made the decision to put herself out there.
From a midnight welcome at the glowing pink Corn Palace to building friendships through local organizations, Atousa's journey is a reminder of what makes Mitchell special.
She may have traded California sunshine for South Dakota snow, but in return, she's discovered a community filled with kindness, opportunity, and connection.
And for Atousa Dinyari, the Hallmark movie town she once watched on television has become her real-life home.
