National Travel & Tourism Week!

Happy National Travel and Tourism Week!! May 7th-13th is a week where we celebrate the importance of tourism in our country, and most importantly, in our region. Tourism plays a vital role in the local economy as well as providing worldwide exposure for our community. There are around 400,000 tourists each year that make the stop in Mitchell from all around the world. The tourism industry positively affects us all, even if you are not actively participating in it.

One way tourism affects our community is by preserving our culture. The city's many attractions give visitors a glimpse into the past and help them to appreciate the unique heritage of our region. The Corn Palace, for example, is a living piece of art that reflects the agricultural history of the area. We are also home to the Prehistoric Indian Village and the Dakota Discovery Museum which tells the story of the first people to inhabit this land. This preservation of history also provides educational opportunities for visitors and locals alike.

Another way tourism positively affects our community is pride. When visitors come to Mitchell, they are greeted with a warm welcome and a sense of hospitality that is unique to this region. This pride in our community helps to strengthen the bonds between residents and creates a sense of belonging.

The most impactful way tourism affects our community is through the economy. Our city is home to several tourist attractions which draw thousands of visitors every year. These visitors spend money on food, lodging, and souvenirs, which helps to support local businesses and create jobs.

  • In 2022, visitors spent $122 million, making up 6% of all spending in this region.
  • The spending generated $8.1 million in state and local tax revenue which funds essential services in our state like first responders, police, and firefighters, as well as infrastructure.
  • The visitor activity in 2022 supported more than 1,600 jobs, making up 10% of the total county employment.
  • More than $51 million in labor income was earned by residents in the county, supporting families, businesses, and local communities.
As you can see, we have many reasons to celebrate National Travel & Tourism Week this year! We are so thankful for all the visitors who take the time to explore and learn about Mitchell. Let’s make this another great tourism season!
